Leisure Centre Built to Last with Permalite®
The design of a leisure centre on the New South Wales Central Coast threw up a new challenge for Michael Davies Associates, even though their previous projects include more than 25 sports facilities.
“Woy Woy involved its own challenges which mainly related to the site,” Michael Davies said. “The new Peninsula Leisure Centre is located in a residential area, on a long, narrow site close to Brisbane Water.”
The high-tech A$25 million facility which opened in October 2005 includes an indoor aquatics centre, sports hall, fitness centre, cafe and creche. Visitor numbers have already more than matched Gosford City Council’s expectations and the Peninsula Leisure Centre is set to be an asset to the local community for many years to come.
The centre’s indoor pools include a 296 square metre leisure pool, a 25 metre program/hydrotherapy pool, a 50 metre competition pool and a spa pool. Water temperature in the various pools ranges between 26 and 38 degrees Celsius.
Other sports facilities include courts for indoor soccer, indoor netball, basketball, and volleyball as well as gymnasium/aerobics areas.
Use of Permalite® aluminium roofing and walling solutions will play a significant role in the centre’s longevity. The Permalite® system uses marine grade aluminium cladding, ideally suited to corrosive environments.
It is commonly used in commercial applications in coastal or industrial areas due to its long term durability in aggressive environments.
The Permalite® system is available in a range of colours; Glacier White™, Enduro Green®, Sahara®, Perpetual Green®, Moon Shadow®, as well as the standard mill finish, and a special embossed finish called Stucco.
At Woy Woy’s Peninsula Leisure Centre the Permalite® solution will provide low maintenance longevity to a building subjected to salt air on the outside and the vapour from chlorinated water within.
Roofing contractor Hyland Roofing used more than 7,000 square metres of Permalite V-RIB® and Permalite LT7® profiles to clad the walls and roof of the new centre.
“From a roofing contractor’s point of view we found the Permalite® system easy to work with,” Robert Hyland said. It has good deck coverage of 915mm and even at sheet lengths of 18 metres our installers found it light and easy to handle.
“You are dealing with different expansion characteristics for aluminium in comparison to more commonly used cladding materials, but Lysaght Design and Construction supplied whatever technical support we required and there were no issues on that score.
“We fixed it with stainless steel self-drilling screws at 1200mm centres and the roof deck stood up to the traffic during installation as well as any other metal deck would.
Permalite V-RIB® in the colour Moon Shadow® was used for the walls of the leisure centre and the roof was clad in Permalite LT7® profile in the colour Glacier White™.
“The Permalite® system provides the market with a stronger portfolio of niche products,” Brent Poll, manager of Lysaght Design and Construction explained. “We have our general roofing products, we have our Colorbond® Ultra range, for corrosive environments, and then we have our Colorbond® Stainless steel range.
